Lidl Ireland has appointed Waterford-based energy solutions provider, Enerpower to install more than €1 million euro worth of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on a further 10 store projects across Ireland over the next 12 months.

This builds on an existing long-term partnership with the Irish energy solutions provider, who previously worked to install Ireland’s largest array of PV solar panels at Lidl’s 58,000m2 Newbridge regional distribution centre in 2019.

Through the new contract with Enerpower and the existing PV solar panel array across Lidl’s store and distribution centre network, Lidl will have invested €4 million in PV solar energy by the end of 2020. At present, Lidl’s PV solar panel array across 22 stores and its Newbridge Co. Kildare distribution centre generates enough energy to power more than 950 Irish homes each year.

Enerpower

An industry leader in energy efficiency and renewable technologies, Enerpower works to make renewable energy more accessible to all. Based in Waterford, Enerpower currently has an operation of 25 employees.

Lidl and Enerpower have worked together since 2018. The company was responsible for the installation of the largest single rooftop solar array in the country last year at Lidl’s 58,000m2 Newbridge regional distribution centre, powering 25% of energy requirements on site and reducing the facility’s carbon output by 473 tonnes annually.

Lidl’s Sustainability Programme

The additional €1 million investment in solar panel infrastructure forms part of Lidl’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through its ‘A Better Tomorrow’ corporate social responsibility strategy which is already working to reduce carbon emissions through several initiatives across their operations. These include using 100% renewable electricity only, installation of energy efficient LED lighting across its entire store and warehouse network and the rollout of electric car chargers.

The retailer has been focusing its efforts on implementing energy efficiency and renewable technologies across its full 163 store network in the Republic of Ireland as well as certifying the company’s stores to ISO 50001 Energy Management standard.

SEAI commendation

Fergus Sharkey, head of business and public sector for the  Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, said: “SEAI commend Lidl, a member of SEAI’s Large Industry Energy Network and a previous winner of an SEAI Energy Award, for their work in reducing its carbon intensity to date and for their continued ambition with this initiative.

“For Ireland to meet our national energy objectives, large energy users need to be innovative and forward thinking to reduce energy demand and increase renewable energy usage. Lidl stores are visible in our communities, and the leadership shown by Lidl can inspire other companies and individuals to address their own energy consumption and climate impact.”

Alan Barry, director of property and central services for Lidl Ireland noted that the conversions to solar energy are reducing carbon footprint and creating a significant saving in energy costs: These savings will be passed on in the value that we provide to our customers,” he said.
