Lidl Ireland has welcomed the decision from An Bord Pleanála to grant planning permission for its development in Knocknacarra which will see the retailer open there by spring 2022.

The retailer said it “has worked closely with architects and planners to arrive at a favourable outcome that An Bord Pleanála agree will contribute positively to the Knocknacarra area”.

With hopes to support the local community amid much economic uncertainty, Lidl states the new development in Knocknacarra will see a significant local investment as well as the creation of up to 30 permanent new jobs once the store opens. The store’s construction is also set to create 50 full-time construction jobs for a year.

The planned store will incorporate a range of sustainability features including an ISO 50001 certified energy management system, electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system. It will also offer the retailer’s growing customer base a superior shopping experience with a spacious interior layout, high ceilings and wide aisles creating a comfortable shopping experience for customers.

“Following our recent successful new store opening in Wellpark, we are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our Galway City portfolio even further with Knocknacarra,” said Conor Nagle, regional director, Lidl Ireland.

He also thanked An Bord Pleanála and Galway City Council for their “ongoing support” and gave “a special thanks to the people of Galway for their support throughout the planning process”.

Nagle also revealed Lidl “plans to add an additional two stores to our Galway City portfolio in the coming years”.

Alongside Lidl’s brand new state-of-the-art store, the new development in Knocknacarra will also have opportunity for a café operator and three other retail units which the retailer is seeking expressions of interest for.
