Lidl Ireland has lodged a planning application for a new store as part of a wider development in Athenry, Co. Galway.

If approved, the new store will expand the retailer’s Co. Galway portfolio to 11 stores, with the opening of Lidl Wellpark on Thursday, 12 November and two more Galway sites in planning.

The retailer said in a press statement, that in conjunction with the landowner, “Lidl is working with architects and planners to create a design to ensure that the new development will contribute positively to Athenry”. The store will create 30 new local jobs with the retailer in Athenry.

The planned store will incorporate a range of sustainability features including an ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System, electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system. It will also offer the retailer’s growing customer base “a superior shopping experience with a spacious interior layout, high ceilings and wide aisles creating a comfortable shopping experience for customers”.

Accross the business, Lidl Ireland employs 5,000 employees in its 163 stores, head office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices based in Charleville, Mullingar and Newbridge.
