Kantar Worldpanel’s latest set of sales figures for the 12 weeks leading to 6 December 2015 have been published. They show that SuperValu remained the largest grocery retailer in the lead-up to Christmas.

This is good news for the company, of course, but as Kantar Worldpanel director David Berry explains, it hasn’t all been “plain sailing” for SuperValu.

“Over the past few months it has managed to get that under control though,” Berry says. “This has allowed SuperValu to strengthen its position at the top, posting impressive sales growth of 3.7 per cent, and increasing its share of the grocery market to 24.7 per cent.”

Alongside its traditional strong performers such as fruit and veg, SuperValu also posted excellent results in confectionary, crisps and snacks, and soft drinks in the last quarter.

Meanwhile, Tesco remained in second place with a 24.1% share of grocery sales. “While sales may have dipped for Tesco,” Berry says, “we have seen growth in the number of items shoppers are picking up per trip. The reduction in value sales is linked to the fact that these items are at a lower price point than last year, leading to a value dip in market share.”

Dunnes capped off a strong year by posting an increase of 3.6% this period, increasing market share to 23.8%. Lidl showed very strong growth of 10.6%, while Aldi jumped 2.6% to hold a share of 8.4%.

Berry added that these early December results posted to a very strong Christmas season, the results of which Kantar Worldpanel will publish at a later date.
