Just Eat, the highly successful online takeaway ordering service, has revealed its trends and habits for December, confirming that while comfort food remained a firm favourite among Irish consumers, there has also been an impressive spike in demand for healthy alternatives when it comes to home deliveries.

December saw an increase of 45% in “healthy” orders between December 2014 and December 2015. These options included gluten free, low fat, paleo and dairy free options as well as low calorie vegetable and salad dishes. This interesting revelation, of course, is balanced off by the fact that Chinese takeaway, pizza and fish & chips were also very popular in December! The company also revealed that December 23rd and January 1st are the most popular days for takeaway over the Christmas period.

Edel Kinane, Just Eat’s marketing director, said that the reason for this spike is the preparation and effort consumers put in to the Christmas dinner itself. “Because of the effort that goes in to creating a festive feast in the days leading up to Christmas,” she said, “many choose to take a well-deserved break from everything and order a takeaway.”

Kinane also noted the trend for healthy options, citing sushi and Thai as examples of this as well as “bespoke paleo” options.
