John Player & sons warns retailers of cigarette scam
11 June 2009
John Player & Son has informed ShelfLife of a scam that has been successfully carried off at a number of different locations across the country, defrauding retailers of packets of cigarettes.
The scam consists of a customer asking for Marlboro Red and then, on receiving the product, explaining to staff that he had forgotten he had switched to Marlboro Lights, or visa versa.
When the first pack is returned it is in fact a ‘dummy pack’ of the same weight, filled with damp tissue paper. The retailer only discovers the scam when the dummy packet is sold, which could be several days later.
According to John Player, a tell tale sign of the scam is a small strip of sellotape on the bottom.
