IllicitShelfLife has organised a conference on Ireland’s Illicit Trade – The €1 Billion Fraud, which will be held in Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel on 12 November.

Organised criminal gangs continue to generate massive amounts of cash from the illegal trading of alcohol, tobacco and fuel while retailers struggle to compete legitimately.

The conference has been organised as a unique platform for open discussion on best practices for combating illicit trade. Key opinion leaders will share their expertise and insight on the issues surrounding illicit trade and the solutions that can be put in place. Speakers include Frank Gleeson, CEO, Retail Ireland and Topaz; George Kyne, detective superintendent, Criminal Investigations, An Garda Síochána and Todd Clements, chief inspector, Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Following this, two sessions will take place simultaneously highlighting the impact on retailers and Revenue and the international scale of the problem. Sesion 1 entitled ‘Who suffers? The €1 billion impact on retail and revenue’ will include prominent figures within the industry – Vincent Jennings, CEO, Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association; Niall Butler, Revenue, Brian Kearney, principal officer, Department of Social Protection and Mark Fielding, CEO, Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association.

A session discussing the international perspective will include presentations from Brian Lee, representative, Digital Tracking and Coding Association; Mike Ridgway, packaging spokesperson, Packaging Industry; John Whiting, assistant director, Criminal Investigations, HM Revenue Customs and Francesco Calderoni, researcher, Transcrime.

The event will be concluded with a question and answer panel which will include Joe Sweeney, spokesperson, National Federation of Retailers and Newsagents; Benny Gilsenan, spokesperson, Retailers Against Smuggling; Reggie Walsh, National Off-licence Association and Lil Courtney, Centra, Fairview.
