Each year, Worldpanel by Numerator (formerly Kantar) looks at which FMCG brands are connecting most with shoppers in Ireland. For the past 13 years ShelfLife has exclusively published these findings to provide a detailed and insightful snapshot of Ireland’s most popular brands.

Worldpanel by Numerator uses a metric known as Consumer Reach Points (CRPs), which measures both the number of households purchasing a brand and the frequency of those purchases. The data is sourced from 5,000 demographically representative Irish households that record their take-home grocery shopping. By tracking these purchases, Worldpanel by Numerator provides a detailed and insightful snapshot of Ireland’s most popular brands.

The 2026 Brand Footprint report celebrates the brands that won a place in consumers’ hearts, homes and shopping baskets over the past year. Topping this year’s rankings are some familiar favourites, reaffirming their enduring appeal with shoppers.

This year’s Brennans leads the way, followed by Avonmore, Tayto, Cadbury’s Dairy Milk and Jacob’s, as the most chosen FMCG brands in Ireland, the data shows.

Worldpanel by Numerator’s 2026 Brand Footprint report’s ranking reveals that four of the top five brands carry Irish heritage.

Ireland’s branded FMCG market reached €1.8 billion in spend in 2025, up 10.2% year on year, and impacted by rising inflation.

As a result, shoppers are buying little and often to manage budgets, still turning to names they know, but the choice must survive more scrutiny than it used to.

Holding a position in the ranking and growing the quality of that position are two different things and the gap between them is widening for several of Ireland’s best-known brands.

This report is about far more than who claims the top spot. It offers a snapshot of what matters most to Irish consumers today. As inflation, global uncertainty and shifting consumer expectations continue to influence shopping habits, one thing is clear: brand growth can never be taken for granted. The brands that thrive are those that continue to evolve, stay closely attuned to their customers and consistently deliver on what shoppers value most.

Behind the rankings lies a broader story about overall brand performance and evolving consumer preferences.

To explore the findings in more depth, ShelfLife sat down with Emer Healy, business development director at Worldpanel by Numerator for a Q&A to discuss this year’s 100 Master Brands at Home findings, the trends shaping Irish consumer behaviour, and what it takes for brands to earn a place in shoppers’ baskets.

What this research IS:

  • Data is sourced from 5,000 demographically representative Irish households recording their take home grocery

  • Comprises over 200 FMCG categories which are recorded by Worldpanel by Numerator on a continuous basis including those in the beverages, food, health and beauty and home and care sectors

  • The list is based on a measure of how many households purchased a brand at least once during the year (penetration), and the average number of times households bought the brand (frequency)

  • These two numbers are multiplied to calculate each brand’s ‘Consumer Reach Points’ (CRP) score

  • The report covers the period of 52 w/e October 2024 vs 52 w/e October 2025

  • Worldpanel by Numerator contacted respondents on average at least twice a week

  • Worldpanel by Numerator provided households with barcode scanners in order to scan the goods that they had purchased for at home consumption

What this research IS NOT:

  • It is not based on sales or EPOS data, measuring either value or volume sales

  • The data does not reflect food purchased and eaten out of the home

  • Impulse pack products have been excluded from the dataset

  • The following categories are not included in the Brand Footprint ranking: batteries, tobacco, nappies or alcoholic drinks

Q: How have the challenges related to cost of living and inflation been reflected in Worldpanel by Numerator’s 100 Master Brands at Home 2026 ranking?

A: The ranking shows a shopper who is still loyal to familiar brands, but who is asking more of them.

We can see that in the stability near the top of the table. Bread, dairy, crisps, chocolate and biscuits still hold powerful positions in Irish homes. Those are everyday products with clear roles. They are easy to understand and hard to fully remove from the basket.

But, to some extent, inflation changes how we read that strength. Branded products reached €1.8 billion in spend, up 10.2% year on year, though inflation did much of the lifting on that increase. So, the spend growth is useful, but it needs to be read with care and context in mind.

The most interesting movements, we think, are underneath the brand rankings. Some established brands are reaching slightly fewer households, while being bought more often by the households that remain. Avonmore is a good example. Its total FMCG penetration fell from 65.7% to 63.3%, but its CRPs rose 3.2%, frequency rose from 23.7 to 25.4, and spend increased 10%. That suggests a more selective basket. Fewer homes bought the brand, but those that did came back more often.

(Reminder: Consumer Reach Points, or CRPs, are a measure that combines how many households buy a brand with how often they buy it. In plain terms, it shows how often a brand is chosen.)

Beyond inflation, the Brand Footprint data shows that penetration remains the primary driver of brand growth, with 74% of growing brands increasing their shopper base. This suggests that winning new households is becoming more important than simply increasing purchase frequency among existing buyers. In a market where only 28 of the Top 50 brands achieved CRP growth, maintaining relevance and attracting new shoppers is increasingly critical.

So, the cost-of-living effect is not so much a simple story of shoppers abandoning brands as a story of greater scrutiny. The weekly shop has become a series of small tests: is it needed, is it trusted, will it be used, and does it still feel worth paying for?

Q: Irish shoppers remain highly thrifty, and we have seen an increase in shoppers visiting stores more frequently. By adopting a value-driven proposition, in-store promotions and special offers, how do brands benefit from this?

A: It’s first important to recognise that value helps brands stay in the conversation at the point where shoppers are making the hardest decisions.

When people shop little and often (to more closely manage their costs), they are reviewing the basket repeatedly. That creates risk for brands, because every trip becomes another chance to trade down, delay, switch or leave something behind. But it also creates opportunity. A well-timed promotion or clear value message can turn a brand from “maybe next time” into “yes, today”.

Importantly, shoppers are actively using loyalty programmes, vouchers and promotions to manage budgets and mitigate rising prices. More than seven in ten consumers report using loyalty cards, while two-thirds are buying on promotion more often to manage their household spend. Brands that combine strong in-store visibility with compelling value messaging are therefore better positioned to convert shopper intent into purchase.

The brands that benefit most are those that combine value with a clear role. Promotions can bring attention and encourage trial, but the product still must earn the next purchase. The strongest brands are using value to support trust, routine, and usefulness rather than relying solely on price.

That is why established names continue to matter in Ireland. Shoppers may be thrifty, but they are not only chasing the cheapest option. They are looking for products that feel safe, familiar and worth the spend. In-store offers and related promotions can help brands defend frequency, protect their place in the basket and give shoppers permission to keep buying the name they already know.

Q: Irish brands have traditionally performed well in the Master Brands at Home ranking. Has this trend continued over the past year?

A: Yes. Irish brands continue to perform strongly, particularly where they are tied to daily routines and trusted household roles. The top of the ranking still has a strong local character. Familiar Irish names remain close to bread, dairy, crisps and biscuits, which are categories that sit deep in everyday life. Even though we have a pressured market, heritage still has commercial value when it is attached to a product people use often.

The pattern also extends beyond the biggest names. Keelings climbed in Total FMCG, with CRPs up 16.4%, penetration reaching 50% and spend up 40.1%. Ballygowan also performed strongly. Kerrygold is another important example. In Ireland, its household penetration reached 29%, CRPs rose 19.1%, spend per household increased 20.9%, and the brand climbed 21 places in the FMCG ranking.

The wider Brand Footprint results reinforce this strength. Familiar names such as Brennans, Avonmore, Tayto, Dairy Milk, Jacob’s, Fitzgeralds, Gallaghers and Stafford’s all show how strongly trusted brands remain connected to everyday Irish consumption occasions.

The lesson is that “Irishness” is still useful, but it can’t do the whole job. The brands doing well are those that connect local trust to a current shopper’s need: routine, freshness, hydration, taste, provenance or premium quality.

Q: Monster Energy saw the biggest leap in this year’s rankings and jumped 35 places. What key factors do you believe drive this growth?

A: Monster Energy’s growth looks like a frequency story as much as a reach story.

In the Total FMCG ranking, Monster moved up 35 places. Its CRPs grew 32.7%, while frequency rose from 9.7 to 12.9 and spend increased 28.9%. Penetration was broadly stable.

That tells us the brand did not grow mainly by recruiting large numbers of new households. It grew because existing buyers bought it more often.

That fits the broader drinks story in Ireland and was one of the most dynamic areas of the rankings. Shoppers are making more room for drinks that do a specific job. A drink can hydrate, lift energy, add flavour, act as a small treat or help get someone through the day. Monster sits very clearly in that energy and identity space. It gives shoppers a reason to buy that is easy to understand.

In a market where many choices are being scrutinized, that clarity is key. Monster is not trying to be everything. It has a defined role, and its existing buyers appear to be using it more often.

Q: Two other drinks brands, Ballygowan and Innocent, also performed notably well and jumped by 24 spots each. What factors contributed to the brands’ strong momentum this year?

A: Ballygowan and Innocent both benefited from the widening role of drinks, but in different ways.

Ballygowan’s momentum is clearly tied to hydration, familiarity and local relevance. It rose 24 places in Total FMCG, with CRPs up 25.2%. Penetration rose from 25% to 29.1%, while spend increased 35.8%. That is a strong mix: more homes buying the brand, and more value coming through the relationship.

The brand also benefits from a local face in a crowded drinks fixture. Its long-running Irish rugby and Dublin Gaelic football partnerships give hydration a familiar context. It feels functional and local at the same time.

Innocent’s story is slightly different. It also rose 24 places in Total FMCG, with CRPs up 22.7% and spend up 32.6%. Penetration rose from 23.9% to 25%, while frequency increased from 7.4 to 8.6. That points to a brand gaining both reach and repeat.

Together, Ballygowan and Innocent show that Irish shoppers are still making room for drinks that feel useful, clean and easy to justify. One speaks about hydration. The other speaks to fruit-led refreshment. Both fit a basket where shoppers still want better choices, provided the benefit is clear.

Q: Looking across the rankings, in what way do you think new product development (NPD) played a part in why the brands that performed best stood out this year?

A: Here at Worldpanel by Numerator we can help you understand shopper reaction to your innovation before and during so essential tactical and strategic changes can be made. It’s crucial to plan and track your launch to identify challenges and course-correct at the earliest possible stage.

NPD seems to have mattered most when it gave shoppers a new reason to buy a familiar brand. That is an important distinction. Why? Because in a more careful market, novelty for its own sake is harder to justify. Shoppers are watching the basket. A new product must solve something, make a familiar brand useful in a new moment, or make a trusted brand easier to choose.

Avonmore is a good example. It remains rooted in a very familiar dairy role, but it has also given shoppers newer reasons to notice it with other drinks, including Vitamins & More, protein water and the return of high-protein soup. That links NPD to health and wellness, especially protein, without losing the brand’s everyday dairy connection.

Kerrygold also shows how range can create new occasions. Its growth points to the importance of making a premium brand easier to use more often. In Ireland, the brand has strong heritage, but the growth suggests shoppers are giving it repeat choice and higher spend because it still feels useful in real meals.

Across the ranking, the stronger NPD stories are practical. They make a brand easier to fit into the day: hydration, protein, fruit, premium dairy, health cues, better taste or a clearer occasion. The product has to feel like it belongs in the basket before the shopper worries about whether it is new.

Q: Do you believe Irish shoppers actively seek out products from brands that prioritise compliance with sustainability standards, and do these brands stand out more than others as a result?

A: Sustainability matters, but the ranking does not show that sustainability compliance on its own is what makes brands stand out. What we can say is that trust, provenance and confidence in the product matter a great deal. Irish shoppers continue to reward brands that feel familiar, responsible and close to home. That can include sustainability, but it is more typically part of a wider value equation rather than a 100% separate purchase trigger.

Keelings is a good example of how this works. Its performance appears to sit where trust meets visibility, local affinity and supply chain confidence. Kerrygold is another. Its cues around Irish dairy, grass-fed provenance, farming tradition, simple ingredients and taste are central to how shoppers understand the brand.

For many shoppers, sustainability is likely to be part of the trust story. But in a cost-conscious market, it has to connect to something concrete: quality, provenance, freshness, farming standards, reduced waste, local supply or reassurance about what is in the product.

Brands stand out when sustainability supports the reason to buy. They stand out less when it feels detached from the product itself.

Q: Which categories or emerging trends in this year’s rankings stood out to you between October 2024 and 2025 compared to previous years?

A: At least three things stood out.

The first is the continued strength of familiar household brands. As we’ve noted, things like bread, dairy, and crisps, among others, remain central to Irish shopping. Even under pressure, the basket still leaves room for comfort, routine and small treats.

The second is the growth of freshness. Keelings rose strongly, with CRPs significantly up, as were penetration and expenditure. Fyffes also grew, with CRPs up 16.4%, frequency rising from 7.4 to 8.6 and spending increasing 19.4%. That shows shoppers are still making room for fresh, simple products when the brand carries trust.

The third is the movement in drinks. Ballygowan, Innocent, Monster, 7-UP and Deep River Rock all point to a wider role for beverages. Drinks are doing more jobs in the day: hydration, energy, flavour, refreshment and small treat moments. Deep River Rock is particularly striking from a smaller base, with CRPs up 64.2%, frequency rising from 3.7 to 5.8 and spending up 81.8%.

The wider pattern is that shoppers are being careful, but they are not closed off to growth. Brands that do well give people a clear reason to buy: a trusted staple, a fresher choice, a hydration cue, an energy lift, a premium dairy moment, or a product that still feels worth the place it takes in the basket.

A: Avonmore has been part of Irish households for more than 50 years, and we believe our enduring success comes down to a simple combination of trust, quality and innovation. Irish consumers know that when they choose Avonmore, they are choosing products made from high-quality milk supplied by our family farms across Ireland.

We have also worked hard to stay relevant to changing consumer needs. Whether that is through fortified milks, protein products, cream, butter or soups, we continue to evolve our portfolio while remaining true to our founding principles of freshness and quality.
