IKEA has now withdrawn both its wiener sausages (hot dogs) and meatballs from sale in the UK and Ireland.

Following the recent horsemeat revelations within the food industry, the retailer said the authorities, IKEA Group and its suppliers had initiated several hundred tests of our meat products.

Results revealed the presence of horsemeat in a few samples of the retailer’s meatballs from a supplier in Sweden. Together with the supplier, IKEA decided to withdraw from sales, all products containing minced meat from pork and beef from that particular supplier.

In a press statement issued on 28 February, the IKEA Group said it is committed to serving and selling high quality food that is safe, healthy and produced with care for the environment. IKEA added that it does "not tolerate any other ingredients than the ones stipulated in our recipes or product specifications."

"We take this situation very seriously; it is extremely important for us that our customers can trust our products", said Louise Bangee, IKEA UK and Ireland food manager.

IKEA added that it is now reinforcing its routines to ensure that all suppliers follow applicable laws and standards. The group will also continue to test its products.
