Frozen food specialist Iceland will open its 22nd store in Ireland next week, on Tuesday, 24 April, in Portlaoise. The opening will mark the third new store for the UK retailer this week, creating 37 new jobs. The 19,000sq ft store will be the largest in the Iceland network so far.

As well as the usual extensive frozen range, the new Iceland store features a fresh in-store bakery and coffee station, along with the usual accoutrements of a modern supermarket.

Ron Metcalfe, Iceland Ireland’s managing director said the company is delighted to welcome all the new customers through the doors next week.  “We have already had a great response from customers across the county for this new store,” he said. “2018 is a big year for us and we’re excited to see the store numbers grow continuously as well as welcoming new colleagues to the Iceland family.”

Meanwhile, Iceland is also taking big steps in the fight against plastic and climate change. Earlier this year the company announced it also would eliminate plastic from its own-brand products’ packaging, and also that palm oil (the demand for which encourages deforestation) would be eliminated entirely from own-brand products by the end of 2023.
