In congratulating Leo Varadkar on becoming Taoiseach, Ibec has called for his government to safeguard Ireland’s reputation as a global model of business substance as the Brexit negotiations begin.

Ibec CEO Danny McCoy wished Varadkar and his cabinet well at what he called a significant period for the country.

“In tackling the challenges facing us in the coming months, they will face many tough decisions,” McCoy said, “including Brexit and domestic policy matters. It is vital that the government places a sharp focus on long-term planning for our economy and invests accordingly. Ibec believes that the only way to do this is to put an end to the austerity mindset and substantially increase investment in much-needed infrastructure.

“We urge the Government to reverse its debt reduction strategy of 45% of GDP,” he said, “which is well below EU requirements of 60%,” McCoy added. “Such overly cautious debt management would result in the sacrifice of much-needed investment throughout the country.”
