The 100% horsemeat burgers are selling out within hours in some pubs there.

Chef at The Three Compasses pub in Hackney Michael Brown serves the patties with black pepper mayo, onion, lettuce, pickles, Emmental Cheese, ketchup and a fried egg and describes the taste as “very much like beef in texture and ever-so slightly gamey”.

Others such as the co-owner of the Lord Nelson in Southwark Benito Priolo are tongue-in-cheek serving up the ‘50/50 burger’ – one horseburger and one beefburger together in a bun.
