Next to Christmas dinner, the Christmas sandwich has fast become one of the most anticipated moments of the festive season, however it seems Irish households have very different preferences when it comes to sculpting the ultimate Christmas sandwich.

A Tesco survey of over 1,000 sandwich lovers has revealed that turkey and ham have the nation divided, with 34% owing their sandwich success to a combination of turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce while 33% are loyal to the Christmas ham.

The survey marked the launch of Tesco Ireland’s limited edition Christmas Sandwich, which will arrive in stores next Wednesday, 18 November. The Tesco Christmas Sandwich will go on sale for €2.99, or €3.50 as part of a meal deal, with 50c per pack donated to Temple Street to help the hospital purchase life-saving medical equipment.

The seasonal lunch offering from Irish owned and Dublin-based supplier, Freshways Food Co., merges the best of both worlds to create what Tesco describes as “the ultimate Christmas sandwich”. Using only locally sourced ingredients, the festive fillings include shaved turkey and Irish ham, sage and onion stuffing, a helping of festive cranberry sauce, and a touch of mayo on soft white loaf.

Tesco’s survey also revealed some of the less-traditional ingredients that find their way into Christmas sandwiches across Ireland, with 13% of sandwich-makers adding brie, coleslaw or tomato, and some more niche sarnie creations which use fish as the main ingredient. Vegetarians aren’t missing out either creating tasty sandwich stacks from nut roast and Quorn.
