The Griffin Group, owners of Dublin’s largest chain of Londis stores, has opened a new high-end food store ‘The Market’ in Stepaside, Co Dublin. Opened for business on 17 July, the 5,000 sq ft site offers an extensive range of fresh, chilled and ambient grocery, as well as hot and cold prepared food and meal replacement solutions.

Speaking to ShelfLife, group co-owner Seamus Griffin said the store has been achieving strong growth despite opening during the summer holiday period, attracting approx 8,000 customers in the second week. In addition to local trade, customers are also travelling to the destination store from further a field, such as Kilternan. Griffin estimates the population of the immediate area, the Belarmine residential estate, is around 6,000. The group has already begun leaflet drops in the local area and plans to target neighbouring apartments also.

The Market offers premium-end, gourmet and specialist products, including a Lawlor’s Butchers meat counter. Two pastry chefs man the full house bakery, which provides freshly made breads, scones, cakes and pastries on a daily basis. The store is also equipped with a full professional kitchen staffed by a head chef and sous-chef, preparing a premium deli offering in addition to hot and cold meal options including soups, quiches, lasagne and other hot dishes.

The store also offers an extensive wine selection, comprising premium wines and Champagnes. According to Griffin, The Market will run in-store tastings for local customers and is launching its own wine club in September, which he says will meet every one to two weeks.
