Following closely behind many of the major coffee retailers, Gala Retail has announced that the group will stop using non-recyclable single-use coffee cups in its store network. The cups will be replaced by a new recyclable cup.

The recyclable cup is available in 12oz and 16oz and comes in four different designs. It can be disposed of in domestic brown bins, will prevent hundreds of thousands of cups from being disposed of at landfill sites.

Tony Cluskey, Gala Retail’s marketing and trading manager, said that Gala’s move is a response to calls from the public to do more on sustainability. “We felt that it was our duty,” Cluskey said. “We have been working very closely with our Irish supplier and Irish manufacturer to deliver these recyclable options.”

In the same vein, Gala has also introduced recyclable packaging for its New Street Deli food offering. Both measures aim to reduce the overall amount of waste being sent to landfill in Ireland every year.
