With a recorded increase of 5% in the number of food businesses established in Ireland in the past five years, The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is to hold a free seminar on Wednesday 29 January 2014 entitled ‘Small food business start-up’.

With 46,000 food businesses already set up in Ireland, the number looks set to rise in the coming years with the FSAI receiving 1,278 business start-up quires received in the last 12 months. The group says the majority of these enquires came from people looking to set up a food business from home.

To aid the growing number of people interested in starting a business in the sector, the FSAI will hold the free seminar in 2014 aimed at making it easier for new food businesses to get up and running. It also aims to help those new to the area comply with all the relevant food safety requirements.

The half-day seminar will see experts come together and explore everything from registering a new food business, food product development, food safety training requirements, setting up a food safety management system, labelling regulations, traceability, the food recall process, inspections and the information resources available from the FSAI.

Professor Alan Reilly, chief executive, FSAI commented on the growing interest in the area saying: "There is a definite appetite among people wishing to pursue new food business enterprises." He added: "We offer free information for people already established in a food business or for people seeking specific information on how to go about setting up a food business."

For more information on the seminar, taking place on 29 January 2014 in Chartered Accountants House, 47-49 Pearse Street, Dublin 2, visit www.fsai.ie/events
