Cork-based Franciscan Well’s IPA also took a Bronze medal in the Ales category.
Established for 17 years, the International Beer Challenge awards reward and promote exceptional beers. They attract thousands of entries each year and are judged by leading beer experts.
Franciscan Well’s Jameson Stout is the fruit of a collaboration between Dave Quinn, Master of Whiskey Science at Jameson and Franciscan Well Brewery founder Shane Long. Dave was keen to explore the effects of Jameson casks from the Midleton distillery on beer. Being a local brewery, Franciscan Well was the perfect choice for this joint project and a natural fit in many ways; both companies hail from Cork and both distil or brew using Cork water.
Franciscan Well Jameson Stout was developed by Shane using Jameson Whiskey casks handpicked by Dave. The result is a smooth, rich stout with unique flavour properties.
Franciscan Well’s IPA was brewed as a result of customer demand for real IPA – a hoppier version of pale ale which originated in Britain in the 19th Century. Franciscan Well’s crisp, balanced IPA is dry-hopped with Citra and has an unusually high speciality malt base which complements the additional hop content.
The Franciscan Well Stout aged in Jameson casks and IPA are limited edition products.
Franciscan Well Brewery
The Franciscan Well Brewery was founded in 1998 on the North Mall in Cork City and is built on the site of an old Franciscan monastery and well dating back to the year 1219. Legend has it that water from the well had miraculous and curative properties, and people would come from afar to drink from it. The Brewery has combined modern technology with age old tradition, brewing classic beer styles including lager, ale, stout, and wheat beer. All of the beers brewed at the Franciscan Well use the finest natural ingredients and are additive-free.
The Craft Collection
The Craft Collection brings together a growing range of award-winning Irish and international craft beers for pubs and off-licences across Ireland. The Craft Collection brand was established by Molson Coors UK & Ireland’s new Emerging Markets & Craft Beer division. This new division represents its Scottish and Irish businesses alongside its growing portfolio of domestically-produced and leading international craft beers. This includes Sharp’s Brewery in Cornwall which brews Doom Bar, the number one cask beer in the UK, the Franciscan Well brewery in Cork, which recently won a World Beer award for its Shandon Export Stout, William Worthington’s Micro Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent, home of the multi-award winning White Shield and the Blue Moon Brewing Company which brews the number one craft beer in the US.
The International Beer Challenge
For 17 years the International Beer Challenge has rewarded and promoted excellent beers. The whole rainbow of beer complexity enters the IBC, with entries received from no fewer than 26 countries, including acknowledged brewing heartlands and representations from advancing beer countries.
Judges include retailers, importers, publicans, brewers, writers and flavour analysts and highly experienced judges from continental Europe. Judges study each beer in turn, considering the appearance, the aroma, the taste and the finish, before discussing their findings with other table members and reaching a consensus on which medal to award. The level of knowledge and experience of the judges is striking and, for a beer to achieve any kind of medal from such exacting critics is a real achievement.
In 2012, the judges awarded 178 bronze medals and 95 silver medals and 30 gold medals. Going beyond gold, the IBC also presents trophies for the best class winners, with nine champions selected.
