Franciscan Well brew voted Ireland’s Best Beer 2012
Shandon Century Extra Stout from the Franciscan Well Brewery in Cork has been voted Beoir’s Beer of the Year by members of the beoir.org website.

Beoir is a voluntary organisation of beer enthusiasts seeking higher quality and greater choice in the Irish beer market. The Irish beer consumer group stated that every beer brewed on the island of Ireland was eligible for the prize, numbering over 130 in total, from two dozen active breweries.
The Franciscan Well is a veteran of Irish craft brewing, having been established in 1998 and which previously won Beer of the Year in 2008 for its Purgatory Pale Ale. Shandon Century was the first in a series of limited-edition bottled beers produced in 2011 from a recipe based on the brewery’s popular Shandon Stout.
Runners-up prizes were awarded to the Metalman Brewing Company of Waterford whose Windjammer Amber Ale and Metalman Pale Ale placed second and third in the ranking.
"The winning beers are great examples of the quality and choice now available to the Irish beer drinker," stated Beoir Chairman Séan Billings.
An awards scheme for the best Irish beer was run by Beoir’s predecessor, Irish Craft Brewer, from 2007 to 2010.
2012 marks the return of the awards under Beoir’s aegis.
