Today sees the opening of Twig, Cork’s first zero-waste grocery store. It is the brainchild of retialer Olive Finn, who also has health food store The Olive Branch in Clonakilty, a traditional corner shop stocked with organic food and health products such as skincare and homecare.

Twig opens today, adjacent to The Olive Branch, with Finn calling it her “passion project.”

Finn tells the Cork Evening Echo that her wish is for Twig customers to create a community based around the principles of zero waste.

“Above the shop is a purpose-built event space for talks and community events,” she says .”In the shop below, I want to encourage people to take their time doing their shopping; chat, be social – shopping like the old fashioned way!”

The store contains dispensers filled with dried foods, spices, herbs, olive oil, vinegars and syrups. There is a section for eco-friendly household items such as washing powder and  bamboo toothbrushes; another for chemical free and vegan-friendly skincare.

Nut butter-making machines, waterp purification systems and more will also be on offer in Twig.

“Everything will be loose,”Finn says. “There will be reusable linen/jute bags for customers, and people will be encouraged to bring their own re-useable containers which they can weigh, fill with whatever they need, re-weigh and pay.

“I have wanted to do this for years and the time seems right for it,” she added.

The Olive Branch is located in Spiller Lane in the award-winning seaside town of Clonakilty. To learn more visit
