The deadline for early entries to the 2013 Blas na hEireann awards is less than two weeks away. Entries received before 31 May will be at the same rate as 2012 which amounts to €35 per entry. The final closing date for entries is 15 July.

The Irish Food Awards are in their sixth year and the first round of judging is due to get underway in August. The winners will be announced on 5 October at a gala event. Blas chairman Artie Clifford said: "As usual the judges at the Irish Food Awards will be looking for Irish products with that special wow factor. We know that over 60% of shoppers are encouraged to buy products that carry the Blas Award symbol so we are encouraging as many producers as possible to enter this year’s competition as a means of helping their businesses achieve the level of success they deserve."

Previous winners say the awards have had a positive impact on their businesses. "The immediate effect was a 30% increase in sales at Tralee Farmers Market and we now have a constant group of regular, loyal customers" says Harry and Ann Perry of Skellig Pantry. Brian Seery of Seery’s said: "From the awards we won last year, the biggest thing we got was recognition. Retailers used the opportunity to promote their award winning products and mentioned us as a supplier. There has been an approximately 20% increase in sales since winning."
