The Cork-based food company Cully & Sully has been acquired by Hain Celestial, an organic products group from New York.

Cullen Allen and Colum O’Sullivan founded the soups, pies and stews business in 2004 and has become a household name with its products being listed by all major supermarkets and convenience stores in Ireland.

Despite the sale, Allen and O’Sullivan will continue to manage all aspects of the business.

Chief executive of Hain Celestial, Irwin Simon, said:  “We are pleased to be expanding our international presence into Ireland with Cully & Sully, a leading chilled brand that has delivered consistent, profitable growth since 2004”.

The deal will allow Cully & Sully to increase its penetration in the Irish market and also move into the UK and US markets.

The company previously entered the UK market but it was unsuccessful and it is now hoping that with the strength of Hain Celestial behind them, the group can succeed. Also this makes expansion into the US market a possibility.

Cully & Sully employs about eight people and subcontracts all its manufacturing. Allen is a grandson of Myrtle Allen, founder of the famous cookery school, Ballymaloe House.

The pair declined to discuss the sum paid by Hain for the business.
