Burger King has announced that last weekend it replaced all Silvercrest products in the UK and Ireland with products from another of its approved suppliers.

In a press release, the company described this as "a voluntary and precautionary" measure.

"Food quality and safety are a top priority for Burger King restaurants globally," the statement said. "We have stringent and overlapping controls to ensure that the products we sell to our customers meet our strict quality standards."

"Silvercrest, a subsidiary of ABP Food Group, has been under investigation for potential contamination of some retail products. This company also supplied 100% pure beef patties for our restaurants in the UK and Ireland.

"While this is not a food safety issue according to findings from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), upon learning of these allegations, we immediately launched an independent investigation that is currently ongoing."

The company added that it is "working diligently to identify suppliers that can produce 100% pure Irish and British beef products that meet our high quality standards".

Burger King noted an unfortunate consequence of the move is that some of its products may be "temporarily unavailable" and apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused.

However, the company added that it wanted to let consumers "know that they can trust us to serve only the highest quality products".

"We take this matter seriously and will continue with our investigations to determine how this situation occurred and what lessons can be learned," Burger King continued.

When ShelfLife contacted a spokesperson for the ABP Food Group regarding Burger King’s decision, we were told that the company had issued four separate press releases on the equine DNA issue and beyond this was unable to comment further on the subject.

The most recent of these statements said the supplier "is concentrating its efforts on its internal investigations and it remains entirely focussed on that task. It has previously stated that it is not commenting further, pending the conclusion of those investigations."
