Leading coffee and tea company Bewley’s has pledged its support to long-standing partner, Henry Heuck and his coffee farm in Matagalpa, Nicaragua following a landslide that claimed the lives of six families in the region.

By way of supporting recovery in the region, Bewley’s has confirmed the purchase of an entire extra container load of coffee valued at €100,000 from Henry’s Ramacafe Farm to aid relief and restoration efforts within the area.

With a close working relationship dating back to 2002, Henry’s farm has been a valued partner of Bewley’s for nearly 20 years. Committed to direct trade with coffee farmers, Bewley’s says it believes in the importance of building long-term direct relationships with Fairtrade coffee co-operatives. Upon hearing the news of the landslide recently, the Bewley’s team made the immediate decision to support Henry and to put in place this additional purchase to help ensure the future viability of the farm and support farm workers across the region.

“After hearing of the devasting events in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, it was of the utmost importance to the Bewley’s team that we support Henry and his team, our loyal partners and long-standing friends, through this incredibly difficult time,” said managing director of Bewley’s Ireland & UK, Jason Doyle.

“Our coffee community spans across the globe, and our partners in coffee farms are core to the heart of Bewley’s,” Doyle added. “We always want to show our total commitment and support to our partners, and we hope that this token of support, will provide much needed funds and contribute positively in restoring their farmlands, as well as aiding the essential workers.”
