The first poll of Beer Academy Sommeliers has identified the perfect beer for Valentine’s Day with dark beers winning 28% of their votes, closely followed with Belgian ales with hoppy lagers taking the third place.

In an unashamed plug for beer in herding beer-lovers away from sharing a bottle of wine with their partner for Valentine’s Night, Beer Academy Director Simon Jackson commented, “All the Sommeliers said that their top priority was sharing; choosing a beer that not only they like but more importantly that appeals to their partner.  A stylish bottle that looks good on the dinner table is also vital,” he conceded.

Stouts and porters won the day because many Sommeliers felt the rich chocolate flavours are just what’s needed for a cold February night and they’re the ideal  match  for rich winter fare such as roast meat or a warming casserole.

Simon added, “What was most striking is that people’s idea of the best beer to share is as different as their idea of the perfect partner.  Where some opt for dark and smooth, others prefer blond and feisty.  But whatever their particular individual preference, all were agreed that sharing a beer is best for a romantic meal”.

An agreement arrived at in a totally impartial manner, no doubt….. Cheers!
