The was further speculation on Asda entering the Republic of Ireland this month. Reports claimed the multiple could be moving into Dundalk Retail Park.

Local Co Louth paper, The Argus reported Finnabair Estates Ltd had applied to Dundalk Town Council for a large retail unit within the park of around 8,340 sq m. The Argus stated “a source close to the project” had confirmed Asda would be the occupant, if plans were approved.

However, Asda property communications manager Philip Bartram, told ShelfLife this report was “incorrect” and the group had written to the paper concerned. “There has been a lot of speculation, but we have no plans to enter the Republic of Ireland market,” said Bartram.

Previously, speculation circulated about Asda home deliveries being offered here, after a spokesperson said, “offering home shopping to Irish customers is something we would love to be able to do.” The Sunday Tribune reported Wal-Mart had registered several Irish internet domain names, allowing Asda to offer the service.
