Aldi Ireland is planning to open a new store in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, in a move which the retailer says will create up to 30 new permanent jobs. In addition, 50 jobs will be created during construction of the proposed new store.

Aldi is set to submit a planning application for the new store to Mayo County Council in the near future. The retailer has reached an agreement to purchase the centrally located nine-acre green field site on Main Street in the town centre to build the new 1,315m² store.

The new environmentally-friendly store will be powered by 100% green electricity and will feature solar panels on the roof.

There will also be ample parking available for customers, whether cycling or driving to the new store, in the form of 101 car parking spaces and 10 bike parking spaces, alongside four electric vehicle charging points outside the store.

Aldi already has four trading stores in County Mayo, with the most recent store opening in Belmullet in August 2020. Aldi also has plans to open a store in Ballina and its existing stores are located in Castlebar, Claremorris and Ballinrobe.

Aldi’s County Mayo stores participate in its national partnership with FoodCloud, donating surplus food to local charities daily.  The Mayo stores have donated almost 18,000 meals to charity to date. Each store is also part of Aldi’s Community Grants network, with Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, Western Care Association and ninth Mayo Claremorris Scouts Group availing of a bursary grant in recent times.
