A new independent survey of fresh meat in supermarkets has revealed that Aldi sells the highest proportion of fresh Irish meat labelled with the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark. The new Bord Bia retail audit on the Bord Bia Quality Mark found that 78% of Aldi’s fresh meat range met the ‘Mark’, earning Aldi the top spot ahead of any other supermarket or convenience store in Ireland. Of the seven retailers surveyed, most scored below 70%, with some as low as 36%.

Aldi said that while its entire fresh meat range is 100% fully Irish and traceable back to Republic of Ireland farms, it was working to strengthen its range even more across cooked and sliced meats to further cement its top position among Irish supermarkets.

The in-store survey, which was carried out in March 2014 by independent auditors on behalf of Bord Bia, calculated the percentage of individual bacon, beef, burger, chicken, cooked ham, duck, lamb, pork, rashers, sausages and turkey products carrying the Bord Bia Quality Mark.

Aldi’s group buying director Rob Farrell said: "We’re very pleased with the result of the new survey. For consumers, it means that of any supermarket in Ireland, shoppers will find the highest proportion of Bord Bia approved meats at Aldi. Essentially, wherever we can provide customers with a Quality Mark, we aim to. We’re a proud supporter of Irish farmers and we know that our customers love to support Irish too. That’s why we source all our fresh meat exclusively from farms in the Republic of Ireland that are certified under the Bord Bia scheme. We’re working all the time on increasing the amount of Irish product in our fresh meat range, and we’re really concentrating on rashers and sliced meats as a next step."

All of Aldi’s fresh poultry, beef, pork and lamb is 100% traceable and sourced exclusively from Republic of Ireland farms certified under the Bord Bia scheme.

Aldi has tripled its annual spend on Irish products over the past five years, helping maintain over 22,000 jobs across the Irish food industry. Since 2008 Aldi has almost doubled the number of Irish suppliers it works with. Over 50% of Aldi’s supplier spend is with Irish suppliers, producers and manufacturers.
