“The vast majority of Irish people consume alcohol in a moderate and enjoyable fashion,” stated acting ABFI Director Jean Doyle, “Indeed, consumption figures in this country are declining and have fallen by 19% since the peak in 2001; we are now consuming less alcohol per head than we were in 1996 and are approaching the European norm.

“However a minority of people in this country abuse alcohol and we fully agree that this needs to be addressed. There are many factors that lead people to misuse alcohol; these are serious issues that need to be addressed by legislators, society and all involved in the sale and production of alcohol. Only by all sectors of society working together collaboratively can we confront the many causes and effects of alcohol misuse.

“Central to this whole debate is making the distinction between the consumption of alcohol and the misuse of alcohol,” she continued, “Alcohol misuse is not in the interest of the industry. Indeed, the industry has taken a major leadership role in promoting a more mature and responsible attitude towards alcohol consumption amongst consumers. We have consistently provided funding for – and have supported the highly visible campaigns from – drinkaware.ie; this is the single biggest initiative to change attitudes to alcohol misuse ever undertaken in Ireland. The initiative has been developed by Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society and has received over €20 million in investment and partnership support over the past six years.

“In order to tackle the root causes of alcohol misuse and to effect the long-term cultural change that is needed, ABFI believes that action at community level can be very effective. Only by all sectors of society working together in a partnership approach can we try to address the complex causes and effects of alcohol misuse.

“The Irish drinks industry is proud of the quality, premium products that we make and it believes that their moderate consumption is entirely compatible with a healthy lifestyle.”
