Aldi has reported its “best ever Christmas”, a result the retailer partly attributes to the return of Kevin the Carrot in its standout Christmas TV advert, helping to attract more new customers.

Kantar data for the 12 weeks to 26 December 2021, showed Aldi achieved 11.6% market share, and a sales growth of 14.2% over the last two years.

“Kevin the Carrot reminded Ireland last year that you do not need to be extravagant to be kind, just as you do not need to spend a lot to indulge your family with a little luxury at Christmas,” said Niall O’Connor, Aldi group managing director.

“Our premium Specially Selected range notched up its highest ever sales,” O’Connor said. “We saw strong demand for our award-winning beers, wines and spirits. Stand out popular products included our Specially Selected Exquisite Irish Turkey as well as our Specially Selected range of Irish Hams.”

During the run up to Christmas, customers snapped up almost 8 million Brussels sprouts, over 500,000 mince pies and more than 200,000 bottles of champagne, sparkling wine and prosecco for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Behind the scenes, Aldi colleagues worked tirelessly in the run up to Christmas to ensure customers could get the products they were after.

“There’s no doubt that 2021 was a long and difficult year for lots of people, but our amazing colleagues stopped at nothing as they came together to deliver the Christmas that our customers deserved,” O’Connor added.
