Morrisons outpaced larger rivals in the UK this Christmas, with its like-for-like sales, excluding fuel, rising 8.1% in the 22 weeks to 3 January 2021.

The group was bolstered by strong sales of champagne and whole salmon, as shoppers looked to treat themselves at home due to Covid-19 restrictions on restaurants and pubs.

Morrisons chief executive David Potts said champagne sales rose by 64% compared with last year, while whole salmon sales were up 40%.

Meanwhile Kantar data showed all of the UK’s supermarket groups benefited from unprecedented Christmas demand due to the pandemic, with UK shoppers spending £11.7 billion (€13 billion) on groceries in December.

David Potts also told reporters that Morrisons had not seen any material disruption to supplies from the European Union after 1 January when the new trade deal began.

The Irish Times reports Morrisons is still expecting 2020/21 profit before tax and exceptionals of £420-440 million, prior to a business rates payment of £230 million pounds. Nevertheless, direct Covid-19 costs for the year reached £280 million.
