Leading Irish chefs gather to support workplace initiative
Commercial kitchens are notoriously stressful places to work. Fast-paced, uncomfortable and where mistakes can be costly, tensions often run high - or worse. In an effort to combat this, some of Ireland's top chefs have launched The Kitchen Charter.

Leading chefs from around Ireland recently gathered in support of the Kitchen Charter, an initiative by the Chef Network aimed at improving the working environment in professional kitchens. Derry Clark of l’Ecrivain and Eric Matthews of Chapter One, along with chef and entrepreneur Dylan McGrath called on those running kitchens around Ireland to also support the charter initiative, to make the industry a better place t0 work for everyone.
Ruth Hegarty, head of community at Chef Network, said that the key to the Kitchen Charter is to change how the industry is perceived. “We have so many wonderful stories of how the industry has enriched lives,” Hegarty said, “but at the same time we need to make sure that professional kitchens are great environments to work in.
“There was a genuine desire from many leaders in kitchens to have a framework that all the team could contribute to,” Hegarty continued. “The Kitchen Charter provides guiding principles to help create a better place to work. Because it was created by chefs themselves, it is realistic and can be adapted to any kitchen, and it shows real intent from the industry to build a positive kitchen culture.”
Chef Network is a membership community which is free to join. The Kitchen Charter was created by the Chef Network community last year and now chefs are being called upon to sign up to the Kitchen Charter, download the charter template, talk to their team and make their own plan to implement it in their kitchen workplace.
