Within hours of releasing its super-premium 2017 Writers’ Tears Cask Strength, Walsh Whiskey Distillery was the recipient of a gold medal at the 2017 Irish Whiskey Awards for the acclaimed vintage. It was one of four awards the distillery took home from the event at Dublin’s newly reopened Jameson Distillery in Smithfield. The Irishman whiskey took home three gold medals: Founder’s Reserve won gold in the Irish Blended Whiskey (<€60) category; The Irishman Founder’s Reserve Marsala Cask Finish won in the Irish Single Cask Whiskey category, and The Irishman 17-Year-Old Single Malt took gold in the Single Malt (13 Years or Older) category.

The limited release of Writer’s Tears Cask Strength is limited to just 5,280 bottles, which are available in selected international markets at an RRP of €125. The whiskey is being launched in Italy, France, Holland, Switzerland, and Ireland’s domestic and travel retail markets.

The 2017 edition of Writers’ Tears marks the first time the product has received a completely new packaging design since 2011. According to the makers, the new design links the artistic essence of Writers’ Tears to the creativity of whiskey distilling through a stunning chalkboard illustration by Irish artist Linda Byrne.

“It depicts the field-to-bottle creation of whiskey and the rural influence on age-old whiskey traditions.”

Writers’ Tears Cask Strength 2017’s gold medal at the Irish Whiskey Awards was in the Irish Cask Strength Whiskey category. The awards were presented at a special event at the newly-redesigned Jameson Distillery in Smithfield, Dublin.

Bottled in August of this year, rach of the 5,280 bottles of Writers’ Tears Cask Strength 2017 is individually numbered and signed by founder Bernard Walsh. “This whiskey displays a depth in flavour bursting with complexity and flavour,” says Walsh. “We are proud that the new design very much ties the creativity of Writers’ Tears with the creativity of whiskey innovation. I hope the lucky few who acquire this release enjoy every moment.

“The Irish Whiskey category is at a really exciting stage of growth at the moment,” Walsh said. “There is a huge amount of innovation happening, so we are honoured and incredibly proud to have not just one, but four Irish Whiskey Awards.”
