SuperValu has offered a number of voluntary redundancies to its long-serving members of staff in 24 of its stores. The redundancies are being sought at the former Superquinn stores in order for this arm of the business to become more sustainable.

A Musgrave spokesperson told ShelfLife said that they are currently viewing expressions of interest and that nothing will be decided until the New Year. They have also not put a figure on the number of redundancies they are offering yet.

According to the spokesperson: “We are in discussions with colleague representatives about the optimum structure to allow the former Superquinn business deliver sustainable growth into the future.  One of the changes under discussion at this time is a voluntary redundancy scheme for long serving colleagues.  We have taken expressions of interest from colleagues in the scheme, but final decisions will be made until 2015.”

“The voluntary redundancy scheme is part of a review of the operational model of the former Superquinn business, which will see the 24 stores deliver an improved offer and experience for consumers.  Any changes will be discussed and agreed in advance with colleague representatives.”

In February of this year, the former 24 Superquinn stores were rebranded as SuperValu stores, following the 2011 takeover of Superquinn by Musgrave. According to a source, a lot of work was needed on these stores in order to get them up to standard.

The news of these redundancies comes just after Musgrave announced that it will create 80 jobs as a result of an €8.2m investment at its Fonthill depot in Dublin, including management and warehouse positions.

Construction work to facilitate the expansion is already underway and eventually 335 staff will work at the depot.
