Following our report in the July-August issue of the prosecution of an off-licence in Dublin’s North Inner city as part of a Garda sting operation there last October, we asked Superintendent Séan Ward if he’d outline the results of the latest Garda operation on minors purchasing alcohol.

Of the 29 licensed premises involved in an operation last August 18th four were pubs and 25 were off-licences.
One of these was an independent off-licence, eight were supermarkets and 16 were convenience stores.

Arising from this operation, three outlets have been charged with selling alcohol to a minor with eight others pending. One independent outlet is among the eight.

To date in 2013, according to Superintendent Séan Ward, nine premises have been summonsed which compares with just two in 2012.

“Another operation was carried out a few weeks ago to test purchase,” he told Drinks Industry Ireland, “when we visited 18 premises in August. Unfortunately eight were found to be in breach of the law including some fairly well-known places including independents and chain stores. Everybody was inspected: convenience stores, off-licences, supermarkets and pubs. We now have to consider whether to issue a caution or a prosecution.

“It’s regrettable that such a high percentage sold alcohol to minors,” he added, “That impacts on the drinks industry itself.
