Catherine Fulvio bakes up a storm for Sancta Maria Nursing Home, Unilever Food Solutions competition winner 

Sancta Maria Nursing Home in Kinnegad, Co Meath was thrilled to receive an exclusive baking demonstration with TV chef and author, Catherine Fulvio after winning the Unilever Food Solutions’ festive Gingerbread Challenge. Residents and staff took the top prize for their spectacular gingerbread village in a winter wonderland scene. To take part, nursing homes across Ireland submitted photographs of their team and residents working together to build gingerbread houses, along with top tips when it came to baking for elderly residents.

NDC hosts free cheese culture symposium: Register now to attend

Foodies and chefs interested in cheese have the chance to attend a free half-day symposium on cheese culture on Monday 9 May, 2016 in the Dean Hotel, Dublin. The science of what makes a food delicious will be covered, alongside the heritage and traditions of Ireland’s cheese culture. The symposium will by chaired by food journalist Suzanne Campbell and will include a cheese tasting and discussion on Ireland’s relationship with cheese by Kevin Sheridan. Olympic athlete Derval O’Rourke will also share her insights into the role of cheese in modern cooking.

Attendance at the morning symposium is strictly on the basis of pre-registering; with a number of places available free on a ‘first come’ basis to delegates committed to attending – email tregan@ndc.ie to register your interest.

All is fair in love and dessert: One in three Irish men would never share their dessert #AdoreCarteDOr

Carte D’Or has delved into the nation’s love of desserts and ice cream eating habits. With Irish people revealing that ice cream is their number one choice when it comes to dessert, Carte D’Or is encouraging ice cream fans everywhere to visit CarteDOr.ie for some dessert inspiration. Carte D’Or’s survey showed that when asked to choose their favourite dessert, ice cream was the clear winner amongst Irish consumers taking 43% of the vote, followed by chocolate (33%) and cake (12%).

New e-book to clarify myths and misconceptions about dairy

The National Dairy Council believes there is a lot of misinformation in circulation regarding allergies, intolerances and other health issues which can impact the dairy category; stemming from the popularity of the free-from food trend. A new e-book which tackles key ‘Dairy Myths & Misconceptions’ in a consumer-friendly format, is launching today on 30 March, 2016. It summarises in a user friendly format the findings from the latest issue of DN Forum (April/May 2016) – a publication for health professionals – which draws on articles by 11 independent scientists to clarify misconceptions about dairy. Beaujolais trade tasting comes to Dublin: Morrison Hotel,  17 May, 11am – 6pm

Launching its first marketing campaign in Ireland, Inter Beaujolais is hosting a trade tasting in Dublin with wines from each of the 10 Beaujolais crus, as well as Beaujolais AOC and Beaujolais-Villages AOC. The Dublin tasting will take place on Tuesday 17 May, 2016 at the Morrisson Hotel, from 11:00 – 18:00 and will be presented by Martin Moran MW, who will lead two masterclasses. The first is open to sommeliers and those working in the restaurant trade, while the second will be open to members of the importing and retail trade.

Smurfit Kappa bags two prizes at the Art of Packaging Awards

An innovative design for fruit juice called ‘Ice Box’, designed by Smurfit Kappa Poland, has won in the ‘Packaging Concept’ category at the recent Art of Packaging Awards. The same pack also took third place in the Overall Award covering all categories. Smurfit Kappa states the ‘Ice-Box’ 5L Bag-in-Box pack is a practical and attractive packaging solution that meets consumers’ needs; sized to fit perfectly onto most fridge shelves with  a conveniently located tap, so it can be used to pour the juice directly from the fridge.
