Lions Clubs International and Tesco Ireland launched a nationwide Christmas Food Appeal which will take place on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th December in all 147 Tesco stores across the country. The appeal looks to support as many families as possible in the run-up to Christmas.

Lions Club and Tesco are appealing to the Irish public to help people in need this Christmas by making a donation in their local Tesco store between 11am – 7pm on both food collection days.

Lions Food Appeal Co-ordinator, Joe Smith commented: “We have been running a national Food Appeal since the 1980’s, and the need for support in our localities is now greater than ever. Our partnership with Tesco has been most welcome and has enabled us to fulfil our commitment to those in need.”

During the two day appeal, customers will be handed a ‘shopping list’ by Lions Club and Tesco volunteers when entering their local Tesco store that suggests non-perishable food items including tea bags, breakfast cereals, Christmas cake, tinned goods and other treats. They can then choose to add an item to their shopping basket and donate it in the branded food collection trolley when leaving the store.

All food collected will be sorted by Lions Club volunteers who will create festive food hampers to be distributed by local charity partners to those in need across their community.

Christine Heffernan, Corporate Affairs director Tesco Ireland said: “Last year our customers and colleagues were overwhelming in their generosity and donated €138,000 worth of food which was given to families across the country. For many families the food appeal is the difference between having a comfortable Christmas and going without and so we’re really proud to be able to partner with the Lions Club on such an important initiative.”

Lions Club International, an organisation that coordinates a wide range of projects and supports local people in their communities, has 115 clubs spread throughout the country.
