The latest supermarket share figures, outlining the 12 weeks ending 11 September 2016, have been published by retail monitoring agency Kantar Worldpanel. The figures show strong growth for Dunnes Stores, which has seen a 6.3% surge in sales to draw level with Tesco. The two stores are now tied in second place, each holding a 21.6% market share.

SuperValu remains Ireland’s most popular supermarket with a 22.4% share of the market and a year-on-year sales increase of 3.1%.

The overall strength of the Irish market is illustrated in the latest figures by the fact that this is the third consecutive month SuperValu has seen a sales increase of more than 3%, helped by shoppers adding more items to their basket each time they shop.

Meanwhile, Lidl and Aldi hold their usual fourth and fifth positions in Kantar Worldpanel’s latest figures, with 11.7% and 11.4% respectively. While Lidl’s share remains the same, Aldi has increased from 11.2% in the same period last year.

On the topic of Dunnes Stores’ growth, Kantar Worldpanel director David Berry said its growth was driven by larger trips. “The average spend increased by €2.50 to €37.20 in the latest quarter,” Berry explained. “This implies Dunnes has successfully tempted shoppers to add more expensive items to their baskets, with the average per item price rising to €2.05 – an increase of 12% on last year.”
