Almost 3,000 shops across the country were nominated for the Irish Times’ Best Shops in Ireland awards, and the newspaper has now compiled its shortlist of the best 100 contenders and sent its judges out on the road to shop.

The judges will face the tricky challenge of picking winners in the competition’s 10 different categories. Winners are then due to be announced on 29 August.

Last year’s winner in the Best food/drink shop category, Ardkeen Quality Food on the Dunmore Road, Waterford, has been nominated again this year.

The newspaper described the 2014 winner in glowing terms, stating: “It’s been a go-to establishment since 1967, when Robert and Pamela Jephson opened its doors, and in the 1990s the family built a brand new shop, converting part of the old shop into a series of rooms that Suirsiders can use for pilates, get-togethers, counselling sessions and more.”

Food and drink stores that have made the cut on to this year’s shortlist include Dublin’s Fallon & Byrne, Sheridans Cheese on South Anne Street, Dublin; Roy Fox in Donnybrook, Wines Direct in Mullingar and Toons Bridge Dairy Shop in Toons Bridge, Co Cork.
