A far-from-icy reception greeted Iceland today, as the food retailer announced a €12 million investment in nine new stores in Ireland this year.

In total, 270 new jobs will be created across the country as part of the investment in the new stores. In fact, 2017 is set to be the biggest year yet for Iceland Ireland, with nine stores announced for Tallaght, Galway, Cork (Douglas, Fermoy, Ballincollig) Letterkenny, Limerick, Shannon, and Gorey in the coming months.

Since its launch in 2013, Iceland says it has been committed to further expansion in Ireland, building a strong team on the ground and growing the store base steadily over the years. Tallaght is the thirteenth store in the portfolio which will grow to 21 stores nationwide in the next 12 months. This growth will see Iceland grow to an employee base of over 530 in the latter half of the year.

Iceland offers shoppers over 2,000 branded fresh and frozen grocery products,  with more than 32 local Irish suppliers,  in addition to being the exclusive stockist of the Slimming World range in Ireland. Selected Iceland stores also offer free home delivery.

Tallaght store

The new Tallaght store, which opened today in New Bancroft on the Greenhills Road, is Iceland’s biggest yet, covering 15,000 sq. ft. and creating 35 jobs for the area. The opening brought the total number of current staff to 268 in Ireland. The store offers consumers free delivery when they spend €30 or more.

The brand appears keen to spread the word about the offers available at the Tallaght store launch, including 7.5kg Meade Potatoes for €4, with new offers coming on stream weekly. According to Iceland, the Tallaght store sets the tone for the future of Iceland in Ireland, with a focus on a new state-of-the-art design and revamped food-to-go proposition, which comprises of an in-store bakery and a Lavazza coffee station.

Galway store

Meanwhile Iceland’s Galway store is the next store to open on Tuesday, 9 May and will overtake Tallaght as the largest store in Ireland, spanning 16,000 sq. ft. The first store in the West of Ireland, it will be located near the NCT Centre in Galway, and will feature an in-store bakery and coffee station.

Unsurprisingly, Ron Metcalfe, managing director of Iceland Ireland was upbeat about the news, saying: “We’re looking forward to expanding and delivering the Power of Frozen to more Irish customers than ever before.”

David Harper, Iceland Tallaght store manager added: “Having worked with Iceland over the last three years, it’s exciting to see the store numbers, staffing and investment levels increasing. We’re looking forward to welcoming our new customers to our new design Tallaght store ahead of the summer season.”
