The German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce recently visited these shores on a market research trip for German companies in the food industry. With the aim of exploring the Irish fruit and vegetable market, 15 German business representatives from all over Germany travelled to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland to learn more about potatoes: from the best seeds, to breeding, growing, packing, processing and worldwide distribution.

Sven Woller, head of marketing at the German-Irish Chamber, said Ireland and Germany have enjoyed a strong relationship over the years. “The aim of this trip is to give German growers and industry leaders the opportunity to learn from their colleagues abroad, exchange knowledge, get new business ideas and ideally find new partners to collaborate with in the near future,” Woller said.

As well as visiting potato farms, the participants also visited  Peter Keogh and Sons in Westpalstown (potato growing and processing); they met the wholesaler Coyle Fruit & Vegetable in Drummfinn and visited Teagasc, specialising in potato research and breeding in Carlow with representatives of the IPM Potato Group.

Last but not least, the German companies also attended various store checks including Lidl in Belfast as well as store checks at The Green Door Market in Newmarket, at Tesco in Dublin’s Jervis Centre and Aldi in Naas.
