EU ups border control

The European Union has introduced greater border checks on certain imported foods of non-animal origin, in an effort to boost food safety.

Safety chiefs hope the increased checks will detect the possible presence of potentially harmful substances for human and animal consumption, such as aflatoxins in nuts and pesticides in fruit and vegetables.more >

Cold snap puts a freeze on farm profits
Healthier white flour
The IFA has claimed Ireland's commercial potato growers will need higher prices to survive losses of €20m during the recent cold snap. Despite a fall in the cost of inputs, more than two-thirds of farmers will still make a loss from cattle rearing this year. In an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions, McDonald's is conducting a major study with 100 Irish beef farms. A new mineral rich flour is being created by scientists in the UK which offers the wholemeal goodness of bran flour in white.
