A new EU-approved ADR (alternative dispute resolution) service has been launched with a view to protectin consumers’ rights when shopping online, and to resolve any disputes from the use of internet retailers.

NetNeutrals.eu, with offices in Dublin, aims to help consumers get redress when they are unsatisfied with goods bought online. Surveys show that many consumers still avoid shopping online for fear of being left with inferior goods or services and no way of recovering their money. Those that do buy online often fail to raise disputes due to a belief that the procedure is too long and would not be resolved anyway.

Charles McLaughlin, who is in charge of the Dublin office, said the system is dependent on retailers signing up to take part and also covering the cost of the service. He added that retailers see the service as less expensive than going to court to dispute a claim. Whatever decision NetNeutrals offer is not legally binding, and both buyer and seller are free to take the case further – a decision that would inevitably cost the retailer more money.
