Ireland’s retail landscape looks a little different today with the news that BWG has purchased 4 Aces, a midlands-based wholesaler and part of the Gala retail network.

The deal, which is subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, was closed for an undisclosed sum.

4 Aces is a family-led business with wholesale operations in Portlaoise, Navan and Clonmel, 85 staff, and 2016 turnover of €57.5m. It supplies more than 1,500 independent retail stores and other commercial customers throughout the midlands. As part of the deal, current owners Liam Linden and Pascal O’Brien will remain with the company under BWG, while all parties stress it will be “business as usual” for clients, customers and staff across the board.

The Gala stores that are currently serviced by 4 Aces Wholesale will have continuity in service and supply, while the new arrangement with BWG will have no effect on Gala Retail stores, which will continue to trade under the Gala banner.

Commenting on the purchase, BWG CEO Leo Crawford called 4 Aces an excellent business with a strong reputation for first-class service. “The management team at 4 Aces will make an excellent addition to our business,” Crawford said. “We look forward to contributing to the continued success of the Gala retailers who are currently well served by 4 Aces.”

Gary Desmond, Gala Retail Group CEO, echoed Crawford’s sentiments, welcoming BWG to the Gala Retail Group “BWG’s expertise, commitment and investment,” Desmond said, “will help to strengthen the Gala brand as we enter our 20th year in business.”
