A state of the art operating table for sick children, more suicide and self-harm crisis centres and a hospice nurses outreach programme have all received funding from ADM Londis who are marking their 60th year in operation in Ireland this year. To celebrate sixty years serving local communities, Londis gave its customers and retailers the opportunity to share €60,000 between three national charities; Pieta House, the Irish Hospice Foundation and Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. Supporting causes which affect young and old in local communities throughout Ireland, Londis’ charity partners were chosen by their network of over 200 retailers nationwide.

Throughout the months of May, June and July, Londis customers received a token with every transaction which they then used to vote for their chosen charity by inserting it into the relevant slot at the display unit in store. In doing so, Londis customers across Ireland decided how the €60,000 was divided between the three charities.  A further €20,000 was raised through national and regional radio promotions and a coffee and cupcake morning in Londis stores nationwide. This brings the total amount shared by the three charities to over €80,000.

The charities were presented with the funds raised at the ADM Londis 60th Anniversary Banquet which took place in the Doubletree by Hilton on Friday 3 October. Commenting, ADM Londis chief executive, Stephen O’Riordan, said: “It is a privilege to stand here and present these charities with the funds raised through our network of stores. The work that these charities undertake on a daily basis impacts communities around the country in many ways. Community is a theme which resonates with us all and as a group of retailers we’re proud to play our part to help support our local communities to be better, more prosperous places for everyone. In presenting these cheques we hope to give something back to the communities which have supported ADM Londis retailers for the past 60 years.”

CEO of the Irish Hospice Foundation, Sharon Foley, thanked Londis for their tremendous support and for including them in this campaign: “The Irish Hospice Foundation receives no core funding from the State and we depend on the support of companies like Londis to allow us continue to work towards achieving a better end of life for all in Ireland. Money raised will go towards many of our initiatives including funding our children’s outreach nurses programme. I would like to thank all of the Londis staff and management.”

Denise Fitzgerald, CEO Fundraising, Temple Street Children’s University Hospital, said: “We were absolutely delighted to be part of this unique initiative that inspired customers and retailers right across the country.  Our one important goal is to help save the lives of critically ill children in Ireland, now and for generations to come.  These vital funds raised by Londis retailers and customers are a lifeline for so many of our little patients.  Thanks to your support, we will we able to buy a state of the art operating table for our theatre – this is where children’s lives are fought for and saved on a daily basis.”

Commenting Joan Freeman, chief executive of Pieta House said: “It’s wonderful to see Londis doing something so positive to celebrate 60 years in business and we’re delighted to have been chosen by the public as one of the charities to benefit from this campaign. We hope to open three more suicide and self-harm crisis centres in communities around Ireland over the coming year and the money raised through this initiative will be a massive help.”

Londis also encouraged its network of over 200 independently owned stores to get behind the initiative and reach out into their communities to garner further support for the selected charities. Many stores carried out their own charity fundraisers during the campaign raising even more money for the charities involved.
